Beyond the Mind: Rediscovering Awareness

One of the greatest realizations I've had on my healing journey is that our spirit doesn't need healing.
We often hear people say, "Heal your mind, body, and spirit."
But I don't see it that way.
I believe your spirit is already whole.
It's already perfect.
It's already a gift from God.
What often needs healing is our connection to it.
Our awareness of it.
Our ability to hear it beneath the noise of everyday life.
Living in Our Minds
As human beings, we experience life through our mind, our body, and our spirit.
For much of history, I imagine people lived much more connected to their bodies. They noticed the seasons, the earth beneath their feet, the rhythm of nature, and the sensations within themselves.
Today, many of us live almost entirely inside our thoughts.
We wake up thinking.
We work thinking.
We worry thinking.
Even when our body is asking us to rest, our mind continues creating stories.
Our awareness becomes trapped inside our thoughts, and we begin believing that's all there is.
But I don't think it is.
The Popcorn Machine
One image that has always helped me is imagining the mind as an old-fashioned popcorn machine.
Every thought is another kernel popping.
One after another.
Some exciting.
Some fearful.
Some completely random.
Most of us spend our lives watching the popcorn.
But what if we stopped?
What if, for just a moment, the popping became quieter?
Beyond all those thoughts is something else.
A spaciousness.
A stillness.
A presence that has been there all along.
The thoughts aren't the whole picture.
They're simply passing through your awareness.
Awareness Is Bigger Than Thought
When the mind becomes quiet, something interesting happens.
We begin noticing that awareness itself is peaceful.
It's difficult to describe because it's something you experience more than something you understand intellectually.
Many spiritual traditions describe this state in different ways.
To me, it's the place where we begin feeling connected to something greater than ourselves.
Some call it Presence.
Some call it God.
Some call it consciousness.
Whatever language you prefer, I believe it's available to all of us.
Beginning with Mindfulness
One of the simplest ways to experience this is through mindfulness.
You don't need hours of meditation.
You don't need perfect silence.
Simply sit comfortably and place your attention on your breathing.
Feel the inhale.
Feel the exhale.
Eventually, your mind will produce another thought.
That's okay.
Simply notice it.
Then gently return your awareness to your breath.
Again.
And again.
Over time, you'll begin noticing something remarkable.
There are spaces between your thoughts.
At first, they may only last a second.
Then a few seconds.
Eventually, those moments of quiet begin feeling just as real as the thoughts themselves.
Why This Matters
This practice isn't about getting rid of your mind.
Your mind is a beautiful tool.
We need it to solve problems, create, learn, and communicate.
But I don't believe we were meant to live there all the time.
The mind is a tool.
Awareness is home.
When we begin healing our energy, exploring our chakras, or simply learning who we are, we aren't trying to think our way into healing.
We're learning how to become present enough to experience it.
And perhaps that's where healing truly begins—not by becoming someone new, but by remembering the quiet awareness that has always been there beneath the noise.
